If Microsoft Buys SEGA, who will lose the most?

If Microsoft buys SEGA, who will hurt or lose the most? There has been a rumor of “Microsoft buying SEGA” and well if Microsoft did buy SEGA what would happen. If Microsoft buys SEGA the most that will get hurt are Sony and Nintendo (obviously). Nintendo and Sony would be withoutsega SEGA games, that means no Sonic (the new one coming out Unleashed), Shenmue 3, Virtua Fighter and many more. Although all Sonic games so far after Sonic Adventures have been very shoddy, Sonic Unleashed looks to be changing that.

SEGA need to be able to publish games on multiple platforms if they want to stay in the business and do well. SEGA needs to prove that they still have it in them with their games and they have shown that recently, with some of their games. Sonic has proved to have a great success after migrating to the Nintendo platform, mainly because Sonic games are generally geared towards the family market, and not the hardcore gamer. Sonic the Hedgehog (360, PS3) was ok, but nothing like it should have been like the originals.

If Microsoft were to buy SEGA though, it will hurt Nintendo the most. Nintendo is a family gaming division and the games that SEGA puts out are mostly for family’s (not all of them, but some of them). Games like Sonic, SEGA Rally, SEGA GT, and a couple of others will not be on the Nintendo system. They are not first party games, but SEGA is one of Nintendo’s major 3rd party publisher and if they lose them then most of their games will be crap. The users for Nintendo will only be looking forward to 1st party games and will eventually give up on 3rd party games. Sony will not be as hurt as Nintendo. Sony has a huge 3rd party support even without SEGA. SEGA is in there publishing for Sony, but the PS3 will not be hit as hard as the Wii.

Now if Microsoft went through with this and bought out SEGA, what will happen to the games that are in development already for other consoles? Will the continue to be developed and sold or will they just be dropped? What would happen to the Sonic team? Will changes be taking place? For the better or for the worse? You decide, post a comment on what you think about Microsoft buying SEGA below.

Most of the Wii’s lineup WILL be crap? You either love the Wii or haven’t been following it. Most of it already IS crap. That’s what you get for catering to the casual demographic.

What we need to realize the most is the fact that Microsoft does not need SEGA. Yeah its true that they would hold the rights to Sonic and other key SEGA trademarks but most of SEGAs franchises are dieing and are not worth as much as they were used to. So yeah, the only main reason I believe Microsoft would purchase SEGA is to hurt competitors, plus they may also gain a substantial boost in the family market. Who knows, it somewhat comes down to how Microsoft plays there cards.

SEGA has been making incredible PS3 exclusives in Yakuza Kenzan!, Valkyria Chronicles, and the upcoming Yakuza 3 (set in modern times again). None have been translated and localized yet, but they are on the way. I believe SEGA is also producing Platinum Games Wii title Mad World, which looks awesome. Platinum Games consists of many of the guys from Capcom’s Clover Studio, which was awesome. SEGA’s working on a comeback with awesome titles. So who would lose from Microsoft gobbling up SEGA? Everyone. I hope this never happens.

Yeah let MS buy every developer in the market – it is they way to win thwa console war – let’s buy everything we can – don’t worry about money, dumb users will go and buy our new crappy Windows 7 which btw at this moment looks just like a add-on to Vista o0

These rumors are always flying about one of the console companies buying another developer. Most of the time nothing happens. I have heard the MS buying Sega rumor as long as I can remember. It could happen, but I am in doubt that it will.

I would have like this more originally during the first Xbox and when Sega was more relevent this was always a rumor then saying that a Dreamcast chip was suppose to be in the Xbox which was one of the reasons i brought the original but i guess this would strenghten Microsoft’s first-party games and sense there’s know more Sega systems i would have to embrace this if it happens.

I’m not sure this really hurts Nintendo. Microsoft doesn’t seem to have a problem putting their IP on Nintendo systems. If anything, it allows Microsoft to ride on Nintendo’s Wii and DS success.

If anything, Sega is gearing up to enter the console war again, not be bought out. They’ve just acquired Platinum Games(a BIG BIG move), and have released several great selling games lately – Mario and Sonic ATBO, Condemned 2, Yakuza 3, Valkyrie, The Club, Sonic Riders, etc.

Plus, there MUST be a reason why they haven’t released sequels to some of their bigger franchises(Shenmue, Eternal Champions, Skies of Arcadia, Streets of Rage, etc). Could it be they are looking to get back into consoles? I think so.

dcbronco, they only put their titles on the DS and that is because they don’t have a handheld gaming device for people.

that would suck because sonic is my favorite game serious and character. nothing personal but the feud with mario and sonic would die.

Answer this, When was the last time Sega released a classic? Sega has gone to the dogs, I’m not sure how it’s stayed in buisness. The last good Sonic game was Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast (Sonic Adventure 2 was decent). You look at say the top 20 franchises and no Sega game is in there. It’s days are nearly numbered…

With a new Yakuza in development i Wonder if SEGA really are going to get back into consoles…. wudn’t be viable imho.

As for MS buying them out… maybe, dunno if MS rly want to shell out for a venture thats not a guarantee.

M$ wants to buy everything. That doesn’t mean they are able to.
I don’t think a Japanese company like Sega with the volume of game centers it owns here in Japan is ever gonna be sold to M$.
