7 Main Things Windows 7 Should Have

I am a Windows XP user and I have tried Windows Vista on my computer and I can’t say I did not mtechxp_featurelike it, but I can’t say I loved it. My experience was not that great because of horrible drivers  from nVidia (you make great cards but not drivers) and because my PC is older than 3 years. Yes I know, Vista was meant for a new computer and not for an old one with a Pentium 4 in it. Well I tried it and it ran smoothly until I wanted to play games or run multi-media applications.

After my experience with Vista I decided to revert back to Windows XP and wait until I get the new Intel Nehalem architecture latter this year and go back to Vista (hopefully Vista drivers from nVidia are much better). The experience showed me something though, it showed me what Vista needed and what it needed to improve upon. So I have made a list 7 things that I think that Windows 7 should have that will make Windows 7 a better operating system.

  1. Virtual Desktop.
  2. The reason for demanding/wanting it is simple, In OS X 10.5 there is a feature called ‘spaces’, which is basically a Virtual Desktop feature. It would be nice and great to have different desktops in which I can run different applications at the same time, but on different “spaces”. You can assign your favorite Internet browser to one Virtual Desktop, Messenger to another, and so on.

  3. Folder Options.
  4. Windows 7 should not be like Windows XP or Vista where it organizes the folder to the way it pleases. If I am viewing a folder in which it has movie or picture files it should not automatically as thumbnails, they should be put into a list and if I want them to be thumbnails I will make them into thumbnails.

  5. Less Boot Times.
  6. Microsoft should take a page from Apple and see how they are making boot times so little. Little Boot times mean the ability to get to do what you want to do on the computer faster, equaling to more productivity time (however you choose to spend it…Devil).

  7. Get Rid Of The Registry and Get An Overhaul Of The UI System.
  8. They can do what Apple did and get rid of their current kernel and and use some variant of Unix as the base. This would speed things up hugely, improve security and stability, and get more out of hardware out there right now. Of course there will be compatibility issues with legacy hardware, but if we can get more from a re-vamp in the core of the OS, then developers can do their job by writing new and good drivers *cough* nVidia *cough* for the new kernel we would not have a lot of issues.

The User Interface in Windows Vista was not consistent and we need something consistent in the next version of Windows. A total overhaul of the User Interface system is needed, something that is consistent, and is simple but elegant. The UI in Windows Vista was good, but they need to remove all the busy things that are just in the way and distractive. By keeping it simple, users will stay productive and on task and they will be more likely to appreciate the way things are run.

  9. Tweak the UAC.
  10. Although I did not use the UAC a lot when I was using Windows Vista I did find it to be useful when people don’t know what they are doing and are clicking on random things. Advanced users on the other hand would just find it annoying and would just turn it off, demeaning the point of the UAC. So Microsoft should tweak the UAC to be more for both kinds of users. Have an option for users that know what they are doing to dial down the annoyances of the UAC to a minimum that bad things would not happen behind the scenes.

  11. Get a Performance Boost.
  12. With processors and memory getting more smarter and productive for our uses, should they not be actually used to their full ability. Windows Vista and XP can not fully take in and use what the new multi-core processors can do and provide us with. So why not make Windows 7 to offer performance boosts and for Windows 7 to fully initialize the full capabilities of multi-core processors and DDR3 memory.

  13. Windows Update, Updates All Applications.
  14. Windows Update should be more of a system-wide update center than just for Windows/Microsoft Updates. There’s no need for every company to have to invent its own automatic updater for every application. There should be an ability for developers to register their applications with the updater for Windows, and when it goes to check for updates, it query all of the registered applications update servers, and offer the updates for 3rd party software in a big list for the user to chose from.

These are the 7 features that I want to have for Windows 7, but there are more features that Windows 7 needs to be awesome. In this article I used nVidia as an example of bad drivers, I just would like to point out that they were not the only ones with horrible drivers, so don’t feel safe. I will soon have another article that will be focusing more on a list of features that I want, so expect that soon!

I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I had writing what I want in Windows 7. Please post your opinion and what you think should be in Windows 7 below in the comments!

i agree with that windows need all of these things , and i also need :

    - better font rendering like ( safari for windows ).
    - a bitmap -based UI.
    - core animation alike framework for windows .
    - a redesigned control-panel , specially for networking , they still trying to keep backward-compatibility with windows 2000 thoughts and designs !!!!!!!!!!!!
    - i don’t know why they removed “auto arrang icons” ,”align icons to grid” from the context menu of windows explorer in windows 7 !!!!!! .
    - really i hate the transparency of aero for window borders , but when i disable it i really want to keep the task-bar transparent .

    Those are very good suggestions.

I like this one from your list: better font rendering like ( safari for windows ).

Font rendering needs to be fixed.

I totally disagree, the font rendering in Windows looks smooth and elegant, in Safari it looks horrendus and totally out of place.

As for the rest of this… All I can say is that this is an horrendusly written editorial that I can easily shootdown point by point

1: Virtual Desktop: Although there are many free programs that can do this, obviously the demand cannot be as high as you apparently seem to think otherwise the feature would have been implemented.

2: Folder Options: Simple… Arrange any folder how you want it to look then simply go into Tools, Folder Options, and click “Apply To Folders”… Bam… Your folders magically look the same.

3: Less Boot Times: I don’t even know where to begin with this one, except that it is laughable. The only real reason that apple machines boot more quickly than their Windows equivalents is due to EFI, which very few non-apple computers support. X64 versions of Windows support EFI, and provide a noticable boot performance improvement over standard BIOS setups. Also, obviously that is dependant on hardware and you cannot expect a $200 basement bin system to boot at the same speed as a $700 mac.

4: Get rid of the registry? The Windows Vista UI is too busy? laughable statements. Not only would removing the registry break compatibility with 99% of all existing Windows applications, it would require trillions of dollars worth of expenditure due to software design all over the world, it is simply impractical. Also, I don’t see where people seem to get the stupid misconception that putting the Unix kernel on things somehow makes them faster, it doesn’t. if you ran the Windows kernel on its own a 100MHZ pentium CPU with 16MB of ram could run it fine, it is the other components of an OS that add weight to its operation.

5: Tweak the UAC: Do you actually know ANYTHING about the changes built into Windows 7? There have been substantial changes made to UAC to improve its effectiveness whilst reducing the amount of nag it gives the end user.

6: Get a performance boost: Again this smacks of an inordinate lack of knowledge on your part, Windows 7 as with Windows Vista is optimised for Multi-Core use, almost all Windows components are now multi-core aware, and Windows actually smartly multitasks to spread the load of running applications across all cores/CPU’s available. As for RAM, the new specifications are usually hardware orientated and then it is therefore the makers of chipsets that have a duty to deliver not software manufacturers.

7: WU Updating everything: Do you realise what a rediculous logistical exercise this would be. If updates for software where to be delivered through WU, not only would the bandwidth costs be astronomical, Microsoft would be required to provide support for all the applications it delivers updates for, something they could never afford to do.

As for updates via 3rd party websites… Also implausible as it would slow the update process down quiet considerably.

It is posts like this that have lead to the immense amount of ignorance surrounding Windows Vista in the press, please don’t carry it on with 7.

As for you Ahmad… I would suggest you actually USE Vista or 7 before making laughable comments about the Control Panel, the networking centers are vastly different to that in 2000/XP. As for the control panel itself, maybe you have its function confused with something else, but it is NOT there to provide a one stop networking center, it is there to provide a bunch of applets for you to control various functions of your computer, the Networking CP is there to control networking. The basic functionality of the Control Panel hasn’t changed much for a reason… BECAUSE IT DOESN’T NEED TO

Anyhow, in the highly likely event of deletion/non approval of my comment a copy has been saved at http://www.infobyte.org/board/index.php?showtopic=9577

Please back up your next editorial with information backed up on facts, not sayings direct from an apple propaganda book

Seriously you need a reality check.

    1. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cc817881.aspx Wow that was a EASY fix.

    2. Maybe if you change the view you should have windows SAVE it. So that it doesnt revert back to default. I can view any folder any way i want. Must be something YOU are doing wrong. Dont blame the OS for your lack of knowledge.

    3. Coming from someone who claims themselves to use a P4 you should really not talk about boot times. Cause i can tell you for a fact that my boot times with Win7 AND Vista are less than 39 seconds to the desktop on my DELL DIMENSION 8400 with a P4. So yet again YOUR ISSUE not the OS.

    4. You seriously need to get a clue. The reason OS X doesnt have a Registry. IT IS LINUX BASED. It is based off of BSD. Read up on it you will find out that is why OS X NEVER had a registry. As for the UI, how about just turning on Basic or installing your own. Shocking i know to do something yourself. Must be tough.

    5. Apparently you have not read anything about the UAC stuff they are doing. Nuff said.

    6. Have you even used Win7? Wait judging from this comment no.

    7. Why call it Windows Update if it updates 3rd party software. Kinda stupid if you ask me. Hey i know let call it iUpdate!!! Better yet maybe you should get a clue as to how many different millions of types of software there are out there that can possibly be installed. If you want to have a all in one update utility create one. Lets see how well you can do.

    Ahmed and Nima….

You need to learn teh difference between something that OS controlled or program controlled. The Font rendering in Safari is controlled by…wait for it….SAFARI….Not XP/Vista/Win7.

Bitmap based UI….yeah lets travel backwards in technology….That was XP and before. Sure go back in time instead of ahead.

    Seriously just wow. Nuff said.
