Why is the PS3 so far behind the competition?

The Sony’s Playstation 3 has been in the market for about 9 months now and it has sold about 4.16 million consoles to the consumers (VGChartz). Microsoft’s XBOX 360 has sold 10.43 million consoles and the Nintendo Wii has sold 10.41 million consoles to the consumers (VGChartz), ps3-controller now why is the PS3 so far behind? Nintendo has gotten the casual market with its ever so popular Nintendo Wii and Microsoft got first to the market with their XBOX 360 and the developers have gotten more developing time on it than the PS3 and a bigger user base. Now, that leaves Sony, there are many reasons for this, here are a few of them.

  1. The Price. The price is at $499.99 for the 60GB version, for now until the 60GB is sold out, after all the 60GB versions are sold out there would only be a new 80GB version that is at the price point of $599.99 with a free game (Moterstorm) for the USA. Now, consumers do not have the money or do not want to spend $599/$499 for a product that either has limited games that they like, things that they can do on the PS3 that can be done on either the XBOX 360 or Wii, or because it is too limited in functions for their liking (right…. :p). Sony is already loosing about $341.35 per 60GB version sold, but if they can they should keep the 80GB at the $499.99 price point or lower it even more to about $399.99 or $449.99 so they can give the XBOX 360 some real competition in the price. The XBOX 360 might still be cheaper, but for $50-$100 more you would be getting Wi-Fi, Blu-ray, Internet browser, Mouse and keyboard support, and much more. This will give competition to the XBOX 360 and might even raise the sales because its even cheaper than the original price point and it will be more in the price range of the consumers.
  2. The Games. The games that are released from 3rd party companies for the Playstation 3 are almost almost ALL ports from the XBOX 360. The ports are all crap also, almost all of them don’t live up to their XBOX 360 counterpart’s. Lets take Madden NFL ’08 for an example. If you have seen it you can see that it lags behind the XBOX 360′s version of Madden ’08. In an article from Maxconsole, EA has said that their developers have had 3.5 years of development time with the XBOX 360 and only 1 year with the Playstation 3. Now we all know this is bull****, as Namco released Ridge Racer 7 for the PS3 at its launch and it ran at 60 frames per second with 1080p! Now how is it that Madden NFL ’08 is almost released one year after RR7 and the X360′s version runs 60 frames per second and the PS3′s version runs at 30 frames per second? Why? Well EA and all the other game companies just port their games without actually working on it and making it better for the PS3. If it was better or even the same they might actually buy their product for the PS3 instead of going to the XBOX 360 and buying the same thing, but better. Now 1st party games are amazing as they actually show off the console, but there are too little of those right now. Sony needs to push themselves to make their games better, so they can prove that they can beat the X360. They also need to help 3rd and 2nd party game developers to make their games look better on the PS3 and have better controls. With this they might be able to get more exclusives and better games as they will show off what their system can do.
  3. The News and Media. The news and media have been against the PS3 since the start of it. They have always been reporting news that is false and information that is against the PS3. They have said that the PS3 does not have all the functions of the X360 etc., but now with almost all that is over people will see that the PS3 is actually a good console.

Now, those are a few of the many facts of why it is behind the others. If this story is popular there will be a Part 2 to this story.

Also, who thinks that Peter Moore had something to do with the PS3 version of Madden ’08 being crappier than the X360′s? :P

Personally, I think the real question is why does everyone think the PS3 is doing poorly. If you compare the vgcharts numbers from the same point in the release cycle the PS3 and 360 are neck and neck. Both selling just over 4 million units in the same amount of time. Obviously the Wii is a phenom and in a class by itself(both in sales and demographic).

One thing I do think that did hurt the PS3 is tha fact it’s two skus got directly compared to the two 360 skus at the time when in fact the 20 GB PS3 should have been compared to the 20 GB 360(HDMI + bluray for $100 more) and the 60 GB sku was in a class by itself. As you mentioned the prices are all screwed up now and we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the 60 GB/80 GB units going forward.

Hopefully the games are coming…I expect a big Christmas season for the PSE…

As for the Madden debacle, I think that’s EA trying to support too many platforms and just picking the PS3 as one of the ones to drop the ball on. They took the easy way out of porting the 360 code developed to run on the 3 core power pc processor and taking it directly over to the single core main processor of the PS3. It’s a shame, because on the surface it reflects poorly on the platform, when in reality it should reflect poorly on EA…

I did not say it is doing poorly, I said it is behind the competition. It is 6 million behind the rest and they need things to shape things up.

I agree with what you said with the comparison between the 20GB with the Premium 360.

I personaly think that the first half of 2008 will be big for the PS3 as MGS4, etc.

I really do not know about that, EA needs to focus on next gen consoles and then the rest, if they can not do that then why do it at all.

    Poorly written.

  • HKK24

Poorly written indeed. “Sony needs to push themselves to make their games better and more visually better”. More visually better? Oh boy. BTW as soon as Sony drops their price MS will do the same, they will never allow Sony to position the PS3 in the same price range as the 360. EA explained why the PS3 version of Madden 08 has a slower frame rate anything else is just a guess, and IMO the PS3 version is just fine. “Sony is already loosing about $341.35 per 60GB version sold”. WTF?!!! I hope thats sarcasm. No company and I mean no company would take that kind of hit on a game console. I mean there is no way to recoup that loss unless people buy 3 copies of each game released.

    WELL DUHHH

PS3 only just came out not even a full year. 360 already came out almost 1 year and a half.

    Do the math.

Can this article be more stupid?

Personally I think that EA has been bought buy Microsoft just like Rockstar’s GTA 4 Exclusives. Lets look at the recent facts. Peter Moore just left Microsoft to work at EA and right after that several EA employee’s left and went to work with Microsoft. Coincidence I think not. Now with the wWork with Madden and probably all the other games that will come out from EA from now on for the PS3 will all be Crap. EA simply won’t put the time and quaility that is needed for the PS3 instaed they will half ass the job and work as hard as possible on the 360 version. They’re like Microsofts Son because all they are is about the Money.

Personally as much as I’ve enjoyed there NFS series if they aren’t going to put in the same time that they do for the 360 version of the game I rather they stop making games for the PS3 all together. I don’t want to spend my hard earned money on Rush jobs and ports. They obviosly rushed out Madden 08 because I saw a video where a guy was playing and the player ran right thru the stadium it’s like WTF IS THAT!!!!

We all know that saying that Shigaru Miyamoto has said something to the effect of “A delayed game will eventually be good but a bad game will always be bad” I rather have a game delayed and be good then spend my Money and get a really bad game.

  • http://www.myspace.com/wildrunnaz merio

WELL YOUR NOT PAYING YOUR HARD EARN MONEY ON NOTHIN BECOUSE GAMES SHOULD BE MUCH MORE MONEY BUT YOU HAVE A POINT….I DO THINK MICROSFT AN EA HAVE SOMTHIN GOIN ON THAT WE DONT NO NOTHIN ABOUT……

“Sony is already loosing about $341.35 per 60GB version sold”

You don’t have the facts to say that. Bad journalism.

  • dachawk

Sony was rushed to market the PS3 sooner than they wanted to. PS2 was doing great. PS3 was designed with proprietary componets, all which take a lot of time to debug. 360 is largely off the shelf components which permitted them to enter the game early with 5 reasonably good next gen games. Since 360 was first, the 3rd party game companies retooled for 360. Some of the game companies produced 2 versions of the game (COD2 and 3)before doing a port to PS3. These third party game companies just have more time with 360 than PS3 to work out bugs and fine tune the wow factor. PS3 will catch up by 2008 holiday season. MS will probably go to another platform in 2009. My guess is they will wait for the outcome of blu-ray vs. hd-dvd and IPTV before MS launches their next platform. Maybe Halo Wars will come out at the same time??? Maybe optic fiber cables for increased broadband speeds (1GHz)will be the ticket.

Merrior………………..your a god damn disappointment to your “360 RACE” You didn’t even mention the 33% failure rate……why the hell is that?HUH? STF^. PS3 has a .02% failure rate. O and I’d love to see the 360 get put in a freezer for 108 hours and work the entire time. Or how about a (120 Degree) sauna for 64 hours and not break. That shit would melt faster then a piece of chocolate on a hot day.

NEXT TOPIC——- The 360 doesn’t have shit for 08 so far and you know it. PS3 has MGS4, INFAMOUS, LITTLE BIG PLANET, SOCOM, GT5, FF13, KILLZONE 2. Once GAYLO 3 fever is over, what the hell do you look forward to….GEARS 2 then what…nothing. Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, LAIR, HAZE, UT3, RC:TOD, PLAYSTATION HOME, Folklore, SINGSTAR & TIME CRISIS 4. Thats just this year.

I think, its a good time for Xbox360. last generation console war, i really like the Xbox hardware ! very much ! So, what i did? bought a PS2 !! why ?? huge library of games and i can get almost all games on PS2 but less games with good grafix on Xbox. This time, its like the previous. U can say enough mumbo-jumbo on X360′s hardware, but at the end, all comes to the games. i think, nobody care how many DVD it takes, as long as good games are there, i am there! Oh! by the way, I really like PS3 hardware but again games makes me to buy X360. this holiday season, i don’t see PS3 got that type of games that can blow out X360. i totally Disappointed with PS3 becoz from last year, i was heard the AAA quality games coming (lair, MGS4, H Sword) and still waiting for them! on the other hand, X360 got lots of games. and with price point, Sony can’t compete with 360 since it release before (+MS money power). So, either way, PS3 got huge problem. Finaly, i think, PS3 loses for Wii, it almost distracted the PS3 buyer to Wii (Japan gamers) which makes the PS3 in very bad shape. i wonder, if Wii wasn’t there, only 360 and PS3, do PS3 outsold 360 ! i think, it can then. my last word, Sony may have huge game developer on their tent then MS, but don’t forget the 3rd party! Sony forgot that and they are not paying for that. on the other hand, MS makes relationship good with developer(thanks Moore) and u know what happening now ! Good luck SONY and keep up the good works like now MS to make SONY pay!! :-)

For all of you bashing this guy about how much Sony is losing per PS3 sold, here is a quote from a PC World article dated November 16, 2007.
“The combined materials and manufacturing costs for each device come to about $806 for the model with a 20GB hard drive, excluding the cost of the controller, cables, and packaging, iSuppli said.
With a suggested retail price of $499, that would mean Sony is taking a loss of about $307 on each console it sells. The differential for the 60GB model is less, with the cost exceeding the price tag by $241.
By comparison, the materials and manufacturing costs for the hard-drive version of Microsoft’s rival device, the Xbox 360 are $323, iSuppli estimated. That’s less than the suggested retail price of $399.
“It’s common for video-game console makers to lose money on hardware, and make up for the loss via video game-title sales. Still, the size of Sony’s loss per unit is remarkable, even for the video-game console business,” iSuppli said.”

His numbers may have been slightly off but the substance of what he wrote was correct. Sony is taking a HUGE hit on every PS3. The fact that they are willing to to do that shows that they are desperate to recoup at least some of the R&D costs associated with the PS3 at the expense of current costs.

As a lifelong gamer with a wife and kid, I have much better things to spend $500+ on than a game console.

  • Mark Surface

oh yeah, you can find the PC world article here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127906-pg,1-RSS,RSS/article.html

  • http://www.mtechxp.net/forums Nima

What I wrote is true, They are taking a fall of $241.35 before the $100 price drop. Now they are losing about $341.35, its basic facts.

Namco made Ridge Racer 7 for the PS3, and that was released at launch with 60 frames per second and with 1080p, EA took 1 year to get to 30 frames per second with 720p?

Mark Surface thank you, you are indeed correct.

  • aeonk

    Those shoes are mine Betch.

  • matt

Sony losing that kind of money is speculation. Nothing has been released by sony. Also, microsoft lost more money in its games division then sony did according to the most recent figures. And Finally, Sony cant take a 341.35 loss on each console but microsoft cant afford to replace 1 out of every 3 consoles they sell under warrenty.

  • blankvoid

Personally, from the non-fanboy hardcore gamer point of view. The PS3 just doesnt have the titles. The features are good and all, but when you buy the system for gaming, and then most of them arent AAA titles; its depressing.

As for the Madden thing. EA has said that when approaching a launch date, they shift most of the development team towards the 360 product; because of its larger fanbase. The larger the fanbase, the more copies that they can likely sell. So the more money.

  • Wolf26pack

    @blankvoid

Personally if I were a game company weather one system had more of a fan base or not I would at least try and make them equal because if they don’t then people who only are going to buy only one system and that one system is the PS3, when they aren’t making the games as good people are going to see EA games on the PS3 and say forget EA games.

EA is already been labeled as a company that rushes games out when there not ready. I’ve only ever bought 3 game series from EA being Lord of the Rings which is over Medal of Honor and Need for Speed series so I haven’t had the troubles with the Madden series. You know you would think that Madden being one of EA more important and Popular Franchises they would do a better job but I guess not it is just another rush job by EA to get it out by Holiday.

In the End this is how I see it. One of the Responsibility’s of a 3rd parts publisher’s and developers should be too show the Strenghths of each Console to it’s fullest. I know that there are time restraints on certain games like sports games and that unfortuante but I guess that is what you are paying for every year when you buy sports games.

  • http://www.ps3hacks.de Brain0verflow

Why is the PS3 so far behind the competition?

PS3 WAS RELEASED LATER THAN 360????????????? THINK BEFORE U POST!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.mtechxp.net Nima

Actually that may be true, but it does not make much of a diffrence, the Wii was released a year latter and is almost surpassing the X360.

  • Creepy17

I don’t believe the problem with the PS3 is merely how it is viewed.

The first problem is that consumers as a whole do not really understand HD. They do not all have nice 42″ 1080p LCD’s and beyond to use. They are playing games on standard 4:3 CRT’s and the all the Blu-Ray does for them is expand the size of the game files.

The networking is nice but again, a small percentage of consumers use wireless internet in their homes.

So when you look at the options from the average gamer perspective, you have 2 systems that look great, but the costs are completely different. The only way they can justify the upgrade is if they have to have a PS3 exclusive game and there are very few exclusives for the PS3, and of those it’s very limited as to the fan bases.

So, it’s not that the PS3 appears to be doing poorly, it’s that it is doing poorly in all the important categories, price and games!
